At 9,718 feet high, the Zugspitze is Germany's highest mountain, located near the resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and near the Austrian border.
It was first climbed in 1820, today it's much easier to reach the summit by one of the three cable cars. For climbers, there are three popular routes and a number of mountain shelters available, and the view from the top takes in four countries and hundreds of peaks.
The area is also popular for winter sports; the mountain has nine ski lifts and offers skiing for half the year. There are also facilities for tobogganing, an igloo village and Germany's highest church.Places nearby:
