Once one of Europe's largest coal mines, Zeche Zollverein is today part of an industrial complex and UNESCO site located near Essen in Germany.
The history of the North Rhine-Westphalia area and its heavy industry is showcased in the Ruhr Museum, which has an estimated 6,000 items on display. Fittingly, the museum is housed in what was once part of the colliery, and as well as the permanent exhibits, there's a comprehensive program of talks, exhibitions and family themed activities.
