Located in the city of Wieliczka, in the Krakow metropolitan area in Poland, the Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of a kind.
The salt mine is 327 meters underground and extends over 178 miles. The rock salt in the salt mine is found in various shades of grey, and resemble granite. Only a specific section is open to tourists and visitors to the mine. One can also opt for the more complex ‘miners route’.
This Polish Historic Monument requires visitors to walk down quaint wooden staircases that open up to corridors, chambers and chapels. The chapels were painstakingly carved out and used by salt miners who spent long periods of their lives in the mine.
