Located in the Harz Mountains in central Germany, the 13th century Wernigerode Castle dominates the town of the same name.
The castle has been a designated cultural monument since 1999; today it offers several different guided tours, including one aimed at children and one led by costumed guides. Castle tours take in about 50 rooms as well as several informative exhibitions and the beautiful terraced gardens.
There's a museum shop here, as well as a café serving local specialties, and you can even get married in the castle too.
The town of Wernigerode is known for its timber framed houses and is on the country's Timber-Frame Road.
