Vellore Fort, built in the mid 16th century by the rulers of Vijayanagar Empire, is often considered a marvel of military architecture. The double layer of granite ramparts at the outside of the fort are surrounded by an especially wide moat that was once home to as many as 10,000 crocodiles. The fort is located at Vellore in the Indian state of Tamilnadu and is said to be the site of first Indian mutiny against the British.
In 1799, the family of Tipu Sultan, the great Marathi warrior, was confined by the British at this very place.
