At first thought, it may seem odd to visit a salt mine as a tourist destination. However, the Turda Salt Mine is such a unique and intriguing place that it is considered one of the top tourist draws in all of Transylvania.
This former salt mine has now been turned into a salt museum and a very unusual, fun-filled amusement park, complete with ferris wheel and mini golf.
What remains of the original salt mine today are the huge, eerie, strange gigantic caverns that look like no place on earth. Inside, any vocal sound you make will reverberate through the cavernous “Echo Hall“.
The mine is located near Cluj, Romania and available as a day-trip. Another similar place you can enjoy is Wieliczka salt mine.
A few tips: It’s cold inside, dress up. Queues for the elevators are long, if you can – take the stairs.
