The construction of the Tomb of Tu Duc (Khiem Tomb), the Nguyen emperor, took three years (from 1864 to 1867) and is divided into a Tomb area and Temple area. Of all of the monarchs of the Nguyen dynasty, Emperor Tu Duc enjoyed the lengthiest reign.
He was not able to to father a son even though he had more 100 wives & concubines. He decided to write his own epitaph although he believed that it would be a bad omen. Today one can find the epitaph inscribed on the stele that is located in the pavilion. This stele is the largest of its kind in Vietnam.
