Within Cortland county, which is found in New York, USA, lies the city of Cortland. Cortland is more affectionately known as the “Crown City” and it has an estimated population of just over 19,000 people. The name Cortland is derived from Pierre Van Cortlandt, who was the first ever lieutenant governor of New York. In fact, the city is located within what used to be the Central New York Military Tract.
There’s no doubt that Cortland is quite the historical landmark with many stories to be told by both the residents and the landmarks. If you are reading this, you probably want a better understanding of Cortland’s offerings whether you are a visitor or a local. Below is a look at the top nine things to do in Cortland, NY.
Visit the Homeville Museum
A visit to the Homeville Museum is a staple activity in the itinerary of most visitors to Cortland as people are eager to browse the collection and find out the stories behind the prized pieces. Collections such as Ken Eaton’s Civil War based collection is one of the most popular attractions. This comes as no surprise when you consider the fact that it includes a train and a battle tank!
If you’re planning a visit to the Homeville Museum, there are a couple things you should know that may make your trip more convenient. First, most people are not fans of large crowds and so they prefer to visit a place such as this at a time when patronage is not at its highest. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays are the busiest days for the museum and over two-thirds of people who visit the museum do so around 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM.
Also, it would be best for you to plan to be there for about an hour or two as this is the average time it takes to see all the interesting pieces in the museum.
Take a Trip to Yaman Park
You can find Yaman Park off the Interstate 81. This look and this feel of this park can only be described as majestic. If you’re the type of person that loves sitting in a relaxing park to unwind, then this is the place for you. If not, however, there is no need to worry as this is not your plain old park.
The Municipality of Cortland, which does a wonderful job of managing the park, has immaculately preserved a small pond complete with a swimming beach if you fancy taking a dip.
The park can spell loads of fun for an entire family to as there are other recreational amenities to speak of. These include pavilions of various sizes, grills, a boat ramp, a playground, and even a skatepark.
Enjoy a Few Tunes at the Cortland Country Music Park
Before starting on this entry, if the name didn’t give it away, this is a country music spot. Therefore, if this is not the genre for you, your time is better spent checking out one of the other entries on the list.
This is the Country Music Hall of Fame for the state of New York and checking out one or more of the events staged here is likely to make you understand why. While the bass can get a bit overpowering in some instances, patrons who check out the shows staged here tend to leave with their musical appetites satisfied.

Take a Hike to the Heiberg Memorial Forest
This forest is located on Truxton hill (elevation is 2020 feet) and it is owned by an arm of the State University of New York and it used for the purposes of experimentation and as an outdoor classroom area.
However, it also makes a great hiking trail, which you are free to enjoy as the university is wonderful enough to share its property with the public. It is important that you carefully plan prior to your hike if you are doing a loop trail or some other preset route.
This is because there is over 20 miles of fire lanes, unmarked trails, and unplowed roads. Not only are some of the trails unmarked, but they are also overgrown, which can present an uncomfortable hiking session. The best option for you is to select a trail that has already been established such as the Truxton Hill Loop, which is a full 3.7 miles.
The trails allow for a genuine feeling of exploration and discovery and there are also three ponds present that are loaded with a variety of fish.
Once you select a route beforehand and stick to it, you should have no problem traveling along it and having a great hike while you do so. To be on the safe side, however, it is recommended that you complete your hike with a good GPS or compass just to ensure direction precision as you traverse the unmarked trails.

Regardless of your ability or lack thereof to play golf, there is no end to the fun you can have at the Cortland Miniature Golf Course. This is a great place for some genuinely pure fun for the entire family that fosters a spirit of healthy competition.
The course and its surroundings are well kept, it is a standard 18-hole miniature golf course, the staff complement is very friendly, and the cost to participate is reasonable. The best part is that even though this is a great offering, the course is rarely ever crowded so you can almost always enjoy a game undisturbed.
Show Your Skills at Cort-Lanes Bowling Alley

The facility is well-maintained, the prices are affordable, and the staff is super friendly. The property is quite large and, therefore, there’s no need for you to be concerned with parking as there is plenty available.
Cortland is a very vibrant area with something for everyone to do regardless of your interests. Many of these attractions can be enjoyed alone, with a group of your closest friends, or with family.
Plan well ahead of your visit and develop your itinerary so that you can get everything you want to do in with the time you have.
