Before passenger and cargo planes were widely used for civilian transport, ocean liners ruled the seas. The busiest routes were from Europe to the Americas, mainly the United States. The Queen Mary was ordered in 1929 during the great depression and was launched in 1934. However, it took two more years for the ocean liner to make its maiden voyage in 1936. RMS Queen Mary is 1,019 ft long and had a capacity to carry 2,139 passengers and 1,101 crew.
