One of the best known attractions in the charming German town of Heidelberg is the Old Bridge, or Karl Theodor Bridge, which has spanned the Neckar River since 1788.
It connects the Neuenheim district with the narrow streets and squares of the Old Town, on the opposite bank. A curious sight on the bridge is the statue of a monkey with a mirror; it's to remind passersby to look over their shoulder to remember their place in life. On the city side of the river, the two stone towers once contained dungeons and formed part of the city walls.
