The gate of dawn is one of most significant cultural, religious and historical monuments not just in Lithuania, but also the surrounding countries.
It is the only surviving gate of the ten original gates built around the city. The gate was built between 1502 and 1522 as part of defense fortifications. The gate has a number of artifacts, including an icon of The blessed Virgin Mary inside the chapel. The icon is said to have mysterious powers and is an object of veneration for the Orthodox and Roman Catholic inhabitants of the city.
