Located 10 kilometers south of the capital city of Corfu, the Achilleion Palace was built in 1890 by the Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Known as the sad Queen Sisi, she had the palace built after the death of her only son, Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria.
The palace has decidedly Greek elements, with the architecture suggesting the mythical Phaeacia, the last stop of Odysseus on his 10-year journey. In addition, the site of the palace boasts amazing views of the surrounding countryside.
The island of Corfu subsequently became Elisabeth's favorite vacation destination.
Greece's National Tourism Organization operates the palace and its grounds.
