Dating back to more than 90 years, Tennoji Zoo in Osaka is one of the oldest zoological gardens in Japan.
Spread over an approx 11-hectare area, the zoo houses close to 1,000 animals belonging to more than 200 different species. There are the cute koalas, chimpanzees, lions, New Zealand Kiwis, reptiles of various ilks as well as the distinctive, black-headed West African drills. The zoo however deserves special mention for the way it tries to reproduce the natural living habitats for different animals.
The enclosure for the rhinos, for example, is built mimicking the African Savanna. Similarly, the reptile house is carefully designed to resemble the real habitats of these animals. And to cap it all, the hippo enclosure at Tennoji also happens to be Japan's first fully transparent pool enclosure.Places nearby:
