Opened in 1897, the Teatro Nacional, located in the heart of San Jose, Costa Rica is the country's national theater.
Performances take place here several times a week, many by the country's National Symphony Orchestra, although the building is worth visiting even if you aren't seeing a concert. The exterior was modelled on the Opera House in Paris and features several statues and monuments, including those to two famous composers, Beethoven and Chopin.
The interior features decorated columns, marble floors and a painted fresco on the ceiling of the main auditorium, reminiscent of the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
