Indonesia's longest bridge, the Suramadu Bridge, was opened in 2009.
It links the island of Madura with the island of Java and has three spans, the longest of which measures 434 meters. It's worth crossing the bridge just for the views of the coast, and also worth visiting at night when colored lanterns illuminate the bridge. Renting a boat from nearby Tanjung Perak Harbor and sailing under the bridge offers yet another perspective.
The actual road surface is about 35 meters above sea level, in order to accommodate large ships. Already, the bridge has become a tourist attraction and helped bring economic growth to Madura.
