Best known for its ornate gardens, the 18th century Schloss Schwetzingen was designed as a hunting lodge; today it's an easy day trip from the town of Heidelberg, Germany.
The gardens feature a combination of French and English landscape design, complete with symmetrical flower beds, carefully trimmed hedges and fountains. The grounds are also home to several unusual buildings, including a temple to the Greek god Apollo, a marble bath room, and a mosque, complete with minarets and domes.
Inside the palace, furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries can be seen, as well as the first theater in Europe to be built with galleries.
