Sao Jorge Castle occupies a prominent position overlooking Lisbon‘s fascinating Alfama neighbourhood, a maze of alleys, streets and squares, some dating from Medieval times.
Parts of the castle with its 11 towers date from the 8th century, and over the years it has been occupied by the Romans, Moors and Phoenicians.
Some of the best views over Lisbon and the River Tagus can be enjoyed from the extensive castle grounds, and there is also a restaurant, gift shop and small museum.
The castle can be seen from many places in the city; it’s especially dramatic at night when the entire building is floodlit.
