Santo Stefano (St. Stephen Basilica) on Piazza Santo Stefano in Bologna, Italy is a beautiful minor basilica with an interesting story. According to Bologna's oral tradition, 5th-century bishop Saint Petronius led the construction of the church over a temple built for the goddess Isis and patterned it after Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Also known as Sette Chiese or Seven Churches, the basilica is a peculiar site as its origins are still hotly debated to this day. Apart from the inclusion of Isis' name, its history also touches on the Passion of Christ, with the seven churches representing the stations of the cross.
These stories, along with the seven churches being architectural gems, make the piazza and the basilica a wonderful place to visit while in Bologna.
