Located on the site of the former Olympic Complex in the Greater Sochi Area, the Fisht Olympic Stadium was built expressly with 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in mind. The stadium was to be the cynosure of the prestigious event and so it did, hosting both the opening and the closing ceremony of the Games.
However, for some time after the Games were over the arena lacked purpose, until it was decided that the ground would act as one of the playing venues during the 2018 FIFA World Cup. For this purpose, the seating capacity of the stadium was enlarged from a previously 6,000 to approx 48,000. During the World Cup, the Olympic Stadium Fisht hosted five matches in addition to the last quarter-final game between Russia and Croatia.
