One of history's greatest astronomers, Copernicus determined that the sun was at the center of the universe, as well as making several accurate observations of the planets. The Nicolaus Copernicus monument is in his home town of Torun in Poland.
It was constructed in 1853 by a committee of local residents and shows the astronomer holding a device used to measure the altitude of a star or planet above the horizon, and dressed in academic clothing.
