One of the dozen Smithsonian museums around Washington’s National Mall, the National Museum of American History opened in 1964.
The museum highlights the scientific, cultural and political history of the US from its beginnings as a colony. The museum’s several floors of galleries and exhibits include those devoted to the American Presidency, sports, music and movies, and Science in America.
The range of objects on display is diverse, including the original Star Spangled banner flag, a uniform worn by George Washington, a collection of lunch boxes, and a life vest from the Titanic. A sky lit atrium the height of five stories is an architectural highlight.
