Monas, the national monument of Indonesia, is a towering monolith in Central Jakarta‘s Merdeka (Freedom) Square in Gambir. Built as a lasting symbol of the nation’s struggle for independence, it was completed in 1975 and stands nearly 140 meters tall.
The structure’s crowning glory is a gilded flame that is lit at night and surrounded by an observation deck. The base houses a history museum and copy of the Indonesian declaration of independence.
