When in Valencia, Spain, head out for Mercado Central. If you want to steep yourself in the local color and spirit of the city, you will be hard put to find a better place than the Central Market, housed in an impressive 8,100 sq. meter structure and containing more than 900 stands in all.
Apart from being a gastronomic delight (you name a food and you’ll find it here—fresh fish, olives, baked goods, cold meats, lots and lots of wine, all sorts of seasonal veggies and fruits…the list goes on!), the market- with its convenient structures, gigantic windows, altogether beautiful architecture- is the place to savor the local flavor of this ancient city. And thousands of locals flock here everyday to get their food.
In fact, although the current building was built back in 1928, the legend has it that this very place has been the site of a thriving marketplace since 14th century, no less!
