Housed in three connecting buildings, Manchester Art Gallery was established in 1882; today, it has about 25,000 items and attracts 500,000 visitors a year.
Over 2,000 oil paintings are in the museum's collection, as well as 1,000 prints and several thousand watercolors. Several paintings by the French impressionist Vallete can be seen, which depict the city's rainy and foggy canals and streets. Other well known artists' work can also be seen here, including Turner, Constable, Stubbs, Renoir and Degas.
There are also an estimated 13,000 decorative art objects in the museum, including doll houses, metalwork, suits of armor, ceramics and furniture.
