Liaqat Park (locally referred to as Liaqat Bagh) is located at the heart of the garrison city of Rawalpindi. To an uninformed visitor, the place won’t look anything out of the ordinary—a large patch of green in an otherwise chaotic and overcrowded city.
However, the place bears testament to a dark past of the country as Liaqat Bagh happens to be the very place where two former Prime Ministers of the country were assassinated. The first event took place back in 1951 when Liaquat Ali Khan, the first Prime Minister of the newly-formed nation, was shot dead during a public meeting.
More than half a century later, the history repeated itself when in 2007 Benajir Bhutto, the first female Prime Minister of the nation, was shot dead moments after finishing her address during a political rally organized inside the park.
However, you won’t find any memorials or markers inside the park that makes mention of this gruesome past.
