Les Machines de l’Ile or The Machines of the Isle is an artistic and cultural project (with an obvious view towards tourism) based in the city of Nantes, France.
The theater company La Machine was responsible for the conception of the project that primarily aimed at reflecting the industrial past of the city. The slew of giant and weird machines that make up the project evince a curious mix of fantasy and creativity and has been described as a cross between the mechanical universe of Da Vinci and the imagination of Jules Verne.
The machines are designed and developed at the place known today as The Galerie of Machines, basically a formal naval workshop located inside the island. Although there are many others, the most prominent, and popular, of these bizarre machines are the Heron Tree, the Grand Carousel and, arguably the most famous one, the Nantes Elephant.
