Kuto Besak Fort (Benteng Kuto Besak) is a palatial building which became the center of the Sultanate of Palembang in the XVIII century. Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I thought up the concept establishing this fort and his successor, Sultan Mahmud Bahauddin completed the construction. After becoming a sultan, he moved from the Kuto Lamo Palace to Kuto Besak.

The construction of the fort started in 1780 with an unknown architect and the supervision of work was entrusted to a Chinese who used cement adhesives and limestone from the interior of the Ogan River coupled with egg whites for the structure. It took 17 years to complete the structure.
