One of the most visited sights on the Portuguese island of Madeira is the Jardim Botanico in Funchal, the island's capital.
Over 2,000 plants from all over the world can be seen here in a setting a few miles from the town center, and the gardens focus on education, although many visitors simply enjoy the beautiful displays.
The gardens are divided into six main areas, including palm trees, medicinal herbs and plants, and those indigenous to the island.
There's also a small natural history museum with fossils, minerals and rocks as well as an exotic bird park, home to about 300 birds including parrots and cockatoos.
