Independence Square or Black Star Square is a massive concrete expanse dominated by a large McDonald's-like arch. Located in Accra, the Square is the world's second biggest 'city square' after Beijing's Tiananmen Square.
With a hosting capacity of close to 30,000 people, the place is often used for special commemorations, national festivals, and national public gatherings. Even churches are at times given permission to preach or conduct their rituals here.
Built in 1961, the Square is a major Ghana tourist attraction. It comprises monuments that stand testament to the independence struggle of Ghana, which include the Black Star Gate, Liberation Day Monument, and the Independence Arch.
