Replacing the original structure that was built in 1864, the present Goryokaku Tower was built in 2006.
It's 107 meters in height, and the tower and top part are shaped like a pentagon, matching the pentagon shape of the fort of Goryokaku. From the observation deck at the top, there are stunning views over the fort, the city and surrounding countryside, as well as a gift shop, café and exhibition on the tower's history.
The 19th century fort that lies at the foot of the tower is today a park, and a favorite spot to enjoy Japan's traditional cherry blossom trees in bloom.Places nearby:
