The largest castle in Scandinavia rises over three islets of Lake Slotsso, in the city of Hillerod, and was the summer residence of the royal family until the mid-19th century.
Built between 1560 and 1630 by order of King Christian IV who was also responsible for the creation of Rosenborg and Kastellet, it is an imposing Danish Renaissance building. Rebuilt after the fire of 1839, it was carefully preserved since then. Inside the Frederiksberg Castle (Palace) is the National History Museum founded in 1878.
In the halls of the castle, you can see an important collection of portraits, historical paintings, furniture and decorative objects from the Middle Ages.
