Built in the late 14th century by Moldavian ruler Petru II (Peter Musat), the Fortress of Suceava has with a long history behind it and has been witness to several political upheavals in the former powerful state of Moldavia.
The fortifications have also been the site of some of the bloodiest and fiercely-fought battles in Moldavia. Many Moldavian rulers who had their residences in the fortress have repeatedly modified it to make it less vulnerable to attacks from Ottomans as well as from many traitors and factious rebels belonging to the militia.
Today, the fortress is one of the most visited places in all of Bucovina and houses an impressive museum showcasing a wide array of historical exhibits, in addition to arranging interactive programs that familiarize the visitors with the region's history.
