Ecluses de Fonserannes comprises of 8 lock chambers, each one of them oval shaped as well as 9 gates. This permits boats to be raised to a height of 71 feet over a distance of 980 feet.
However, this was not enough for commercial boats and traffic to bypass the locks. This led to the Fonserannes inclined planes to be built next to to the locks in the year 1983 to facilitate boats and traffic, too large for the locks to bypass them.
This project was abandoned in the year 2001 because of technical problems. Traditional buildings like the lock keeper's house and the stables still remain.
