The only palace in the world to house royalty for more than eight centuries, Chateau de Fontainebleau is located approximately 55 kilometers southeast of Paris in Fontainebleau, France.
This medieval castle and palace housed monarchs from the time of Louis VII to Napoleon III. The chateau takes its names from one of the springs found in the English gardens on the extensive palace grounds. Buildings were originally constructed on the site in 1137, but took on a Renaissance theme beginning in the early 16th century when Francis I expanded it significantly.
