One of the best places in Costa Rica to sample daily life is at the Central Market, in San Jose.
Over 20,000 locals and tourists visit the market every day, which dates from 1882, and is still a maze of stalls and alleyways, despite being remodeled over the years. Meat, fresh fish, and fruit and vegetables can all be purchased here, as well as more exotic items such as medicinal herbs.
Plenty of sodas, or small cafes serve meals and drinks, and the market is as much a meeting place as it is shopping destination. It's located next to the Central Plaza and open Monday to Saturday.Places nearby:
