This cathedral has an illustrious history because it has been in existence since the 19th century. The cathedral has a rich history because the original structure was rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1856. The Archbishop José Eusebio Colombres commissioned the architect Felipe Bertrés to start work on the new cathedral in 1858. This project was completed in 1882 and was declared a national monument in 1941.
