Wales is said to have more castles than any other country, and one of the best preserved is Caerphilly Castle in South Wales.
It's also the second largest in the UK and has some of the most effective water defenses anywhere. Highlights include the massive towers and thick walls, the stones carved with the faces of past occupants, as well as the leaning tower and the replica siege engines.
The castle has the usual gift shop, as well as a comprehensive visitors' center and an exhibition on the castle's history and later restoration. It also hosts regular events such as archery displays and beer festivals.
