In 1955, the Birmingham Zoo opened its doors to visitors. More than 800 animals (200 separate species) populate the 122-acre property. Various attractions are available in the zoo, including gift shops and cafes. Even a carousel is available for patrons of the zoo, and it's a popular ride for children.
The Trails of Africa expansion opened in 2011. This particular attraction features African elephants and other African species. In fact, few zoos feature a larger elephant breeding program. Birmingham features Alabama's largest zoo with more than 500,000 annual visitors. A better zoo experience might not be available in the state.Places nearby:
