The Astrakhan Kremlin may not be as well known as its Moscow counterpart but it's just as impressive. The 16th century fortress sits on a hill overlooking the southern Russian city of Astrakhan.
Admission to the complex is free and there are several things to see since it was converted into a museum in 1973. On display are exhibitions on famous uprisings, as well as exhibits that tell the story of the garrison once stationed here, and displays of life in Medieval Russia.
The entire complex is in the heart of the city, within easy reach of several parks and an attractive pedestrianized shopping street.
