Built in the 15th century, Ampel Mosque in Surabaya enjoys the distinction of being the oldest mosque in East Java. The mosque was built by Sunan Ampel, one of the nine revered Javanese saints.
Sunan Ampel's tomb complex is located inside the mosque ground as well. Strangely enough, the mosque is surrounded by a motley of buildings showing influences of Arab and Chinese architectures. This somewhat curious surrounding actually serves to put the mosque complex in high relief. Inside the mosque, the tomb complex of Ampel is placed within a walled courtyard and tiered structures lead up to the grave of the saint.
